Do you know the history of snow skiing?
The oldest ski that has ever been found was discovered in a cave in Sweden. This ski proved to be at least 4.500 years old. were drawings of hunters on skis.
Ski Boot Reviews Help? You probably would agree if I told you that a skier is no skier without a pair of ski's, right? Most of us would ..... It makes the scientists believe that some kind of skiing was already going on long before the exact scientific date was determined. When looking at this ski it is to be presumed that this ski was mainly mad in order to stay on top of the snow; the ski was wide and short. Ski poles were probably discovered when the skier realized that using a walking stick helped him keep his balance and using two walking sticks helped him gain speed when traveling down hill.
NORDIC
On these skis early versions of a boot mounted to the toe appeared. This allowed the skier to move the heel up and down freely. This kind of mounting we would call "Nordic" today. The very first organized Nordic competition included not only downhill skiing but cross country and ski jumping as well. As far as we know the earliest events were held in the early 1800s.
TELEMARK
The Telemarkers out of the city "Telemark" in Norway are give the credit in the history of snow skiing history books for developing skiing into a serious sport around the early 1700s. a Telemarker himself Norheim's invention made it possible to find a ski after a fall into deep snow quickly.
The first organized events that included cross-country
WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES 1924
Chamonix in the French Alps was the first host for these first games. These games consisted of two types of ski competition; ski jumping and combined Nordic. Chalres Jewtraw won the first ever gold medal in these Olympics in the 500 meter speed skating event. Norway won 17 medals
WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES 1932 Cross country made it's first appearance here but had to be moved because of lack of snow that year. The history of snow skiing shows the U.S. won this one with a total of 12 medals.
The history of snow skiing allows us comfort in the knowledge that it is "all downhill from here."
